Wondering how to help older children adjust to the new baby? The transition from being an only child (or the “baby” of the family) to becoming a big sibling is such a monumental milestone. As a Virginia Beach newborn photographer and a mama of three myself, I’ve seen firsthand the mix of excitement and “wait, what’s happening?” that toddlers feel when a new baby enters the picture.
Whether you’re currently nesting or counting down the days until your newborn session, here are my favorite heart-led ways to help your older children adjust to the new baby!

Start the Conversation Early (and Often!)

Toddlers live in the “now,” so nine months can feel like an eternity! I love using picture books to help them visualize what life will look like. Reading stories about becoming a big brother or sister helps normalize the idea of a baby who cries, sleeps, and eventually plays.
While you’re snuggling on the couch looking at your own childhood albums (one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon!), show them pictures of when they were a tiny newborn. Remind them how much they were loved then and how that love is only growing now.

Involve Them in the “Big Kid” Tasks

Empower your older child by giving them a “job.” Maybe they help pick out a special swaddle from the nursery, or they choose which soft teddy bear the baby should have first.
During your at-home newborn session, I always make sure the older siblings feel like the stars of the show. We focus on those “big kid” responsibilities—like “helping” me watch the baby or showing me how they can gently pat the baby’s back. It builds their confidence and makes them feel included in this new family dynamic rather than pushed to the side.

Validate the Big Feelings

It’s completely normal for a toddler to feel a little bit of jealousy or “sibling regression.” They might suddenly want to wear a diaper again or be carried like a baby. My best advice? Lean into it. Give them that extra bit of “babying” when they ask for it.
When the baby arrives, try to carve out 10–15 minutes of dedicated, one-on-one time with your older child each day. No phones, no baby—just you and your “first baby” doing something they love. It fills their cup and reminds them that, as the family grows, their place in your heart remains as secure as ever.

Prepare for Your Newborn Photos

One of the best ways to help your child adjust to the new baby is through professional portraits. I specialize in baby-led sessions that prioritize the comfort of the whole family. We won’t force your toddler to sit still and smile; instead, we’ll capture those authentic, “in-between” moments of wonder as they look at their new sibling.
If you’re expecting and want to document this beautiful, messy, joyful transition, I would love to help you tell your story. From my curated client wardrobe to professional hair and makeup, I take care of the details so you can focus on loving your babies.
